I just check my gmail account. the page is displaying a new invite box on the left side of the page. and I can see, also, I have 50 invite left to be used !
I think you're right, Google is almost ready to make gmail public... Or, Google will keep the invitation system to avoid too much people to subscribe. It can be a very good system to limit subscribers.
I saw last week that the german webmail provider increase the mailbox to 1GB.
GMX provides POP3/IMAP/Webmail access + DSL connexions.

I can't stand the constant music in the background. I can't hear you clearly and it's an unnecessary distraction. If you remove the music I’m happy to resubscribe.
